He has been writing on his personal site adactio.com since 2001.

Books

  • DOM Scripting (2005): an introduction to manipulating HTML documents with JavaScript in line with web standards
  • Bulletproof Ajax (2007): explained how to use Ajax while ensuring that functionality is not lost in environments where JavaScript does not run. The author named this approach "Hijax" and had been spreading it in talks before the book came out

  • Resilient Web Design (2016): a book that traces the history of the web while discussing how to build websites that do not break easily. It is published free on the web and distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. He is said to regard it as the work he is proudest of

adactio.com and his stance on the web

adactio.com began in November 2001. He calls it not a blog but a "journal". He posts first to his own site and syndicates from there to the various social networks, and he has been involved in the IndieWeb movement, which values individuals owning their own sites.

Beyond keeping his own site for a long time, he continues to speak out in writing and talks from a position that values building without relying too heavily on particular technologies or large platforms, and that cares about the long-term preservation of the web. He curated the conference "dConstruct" for several years, and he also built "Huffduffer", a service for collecting audio files into a personal podcast.

Music

He is a lover of Irish traditional music and plays traditional tunes on the mandolin. He built "The Session", a community site for sharing traditional tunes and session information, and has run it for more than twenty years. He also plays bouzouki in the Brighton rock band Salter Cane.
